Understanding the IVF process: A step-by-step guide

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a complex process that can be overwhelming for couples who are trying to conceive. Understanding the IVF process can help make the experience less daunting and increase the chances of success.

Consultation and evaluation: The first step in the IVF process is to schedule a consultation with a fertility specialist. During this visit, the specialist will evaluate your medical history, conduct a physical exam, and perform some basic tests to determine the cause of infertility.

Ovarian stimulation: The next step is to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This is done by administering hormones via injection. The stimulation process usually takes around 10-14 days.

Egg retrieval: Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved using a procedure called transvaginal ultrasound aspiration. This is done under sedation or general anesthesia.

Fertilization: The eggs are then fertilized with sperm in a laboratory dish, in a process called insemination. In some cases, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be used, which is a procedure that involves injecting a single sperm directly into an egg.

Embryo culture: The fertilized eggs are then grown in a laboratory for a period of 2-6 days to allow them to divide and become embryos.

Embryo transfer: The embryos are then transferred to the woman’s uterus, in a procedure called embryo transfer. This is typically done 3-5 days after egg retrieval.

Pregnancy test: A pregnancy test is performed about two weeks after the embryo transfer, to confirm if the treatment is successful.

Cryopreservation: Any unused embryos may be frozen for future use.
