Surrogacy is a method/agreement between an intended couple and a healthy woman called the surrogate. The surrogate agrees to carry the pregnancy for the infertile intended couple, who eventually become the parents of the child.
There are two types of surrogacy –
- Gestational surrogacy – The surrogate does not have any genetic connection to the embryo. The embryo is produced using the egg and sperm of the intended parents.
- Traditional surrogacy – The surrogate’s eggs are used to produce the embryo.
